Yrana Avery, a mother of 3 that has been homeschooling her children for 7 years noticed while watching a news segment on Fox, that although the media is constantly talking about homeschooling, they rarely if ever include the perspective of parents that were home educating prior to the Covid-19 crisis. So Yrana sent the letter below to Fox News and similar letters to other news outlets.
Re: Panel of homeschool families: How we effectively school from home (Re: Harris Faulkner’s America Learns Together -aired 4-21-20)
Hello FOX. I have just watched Harris Faulkner’s Outnumbered: America Learns Together (Town Hall) and I’m so pleased to see that FOX has taken on this very controversial yet necessary subject. The hour was especially informative and indeed well spent. But my question is, why didn’t the panel include the expertise of those who were already schooling from home prior to this pandemic: the homeschool families that have actually been successfully educating our children at home for years? I am a homeschool mom of three (ages 13, 11, 9) and we’ve been excelling for the past seven years. In the past several weeks I have been flooded with calls from family and friends with questions about: the structure of our routines and managing lessons during stressful times and too much togetherness and discipline and conducting school on a TIGHT budget. The list goes on and on. Would it be possible to conduct another panel with some of these experienced families? As of right now families are very discouraged and few see the benefit of having their children at home. I believe America would be encouraged to learn IT CAN BE DONE 🙂 I am hoping FOX will contact the homeschool community and shed a positive light on an otherwise dark and hopeless situation.
Families need hope! I believe this will be key in the long run; far outweighing the loss of learning!

I completely agree with Those Doggone Averys and hope the media takes heed of their suggestion to have more panels that include traditional homeschoolers in local and national conversations on home education. Please share and tag the news media if you agree.
